ISIS ARTS INVITES YOU TO AN ARTIST TALK EVENT WITH SWEDISH ARTIST

Cecilia Stenbom’s artworks and films explore notions of identity and relationships in a mediated world. She examines our desires by appropriating genres of mass media and commodity such as advertising, documentary and the TV movie, fulfilling the expectations that those genres set up.
Previous works have included “The Protocol” (2008), a re-enactment of an American infomercial, “The Inspector” (2007) a narrative based on female television cops and “Search & Destroy” (2006) a “first person” account of experiences as a US marine in the Vietnam War based on cult movies on that subject.
During the research residency at ISIS Arts Cecilia is developing and producing a new body of work that is investigating capitalisation and dramatisation of domestic concerns, such as health, security and safety. As part of this project, Cecilia is using a wide range of source material such as real rescue drama documentaries, mortality statistics and first aid equipment. This project will culminate in a solo exhibition at Workplace Gallery in 2010. Cecilia has received a grant from Arts Council England to develop and produce this work.
“In my artworks my subject is myself. Through my own image I explore notions of identity and relationships in a mediated world. I examine our desires by appropriating genres of mass media and commodity such as advertising, documentary and the TV movie, fulfilling the expectations that those genres set up. Through the means of a kind of narcissistic projection into fantastical roles such as a US Marine, Police Cop, or Multilingual Translator I try to find ways to examine the systems inherent in contemporary culture. Forming a knowingly amateurish pastiche I attempt to carry through to completion the wants of a culture that I see constantly beckoning to a place that arguably should never be reached. ”

Cecilia works in a wide range of material including drawing, painting, installation, sculpture, artists books, and photography, although her main focus lies in video. She has exhibited extensively nationally and internationally and recent exhibitions include “WRO Media Art Biennale” in Wroclaw, Poland, “Trickle Down Theory”, at Korjaamo in Helsinki, Finland and “In the City” in Sunderland City Centre. Cecilia is represented by Workplace Gallery <http://www.workplacegallery.co.uk> , Gateshead and her video work is distributed by AV-arkki, Helsinki, Finland.
Cecilia Stenbom was born in Stockholm in 1976. She studied Fine Art at the Academy of Fine Arts, Helsinki, Finland where she completed a Bachelor degree. In 2003 she moved to Scotland to do a MFA at Glasgow School of Art. After completing her MFA she moved to the North East of England to live and work.

Information on ISIS Arts
ISIS Arts is an artist led, visual and media arts organisation with an international artist residency, commissions, training and research programme. Their programme seeks to address themes of identity and cultural understanding and they engage with artists to produce work that challenges and presents social issues within new contexts.
ISIS has two studio spaces for visiting artists, a media training room, and an inflatable touring venue for sharing media arts with a wider audience. From their Newcastle base ISIS works with over 100 artists a year supporting practice and exchange.
